Leo Avalos, a determined young soccer player from Modesto, California, continues to embrace the unique challenges and opportunities of his training experience in Spain. His second week has been an intense yet rewarding period, filled with growth, both on and off the field.

A Taste of Spain

One of the first things Leo noticed about life in Spain was the freshness and quality of the food. “The food experience overall caught me by surprise,” Leo shared. “Everything is fresh and actually good for you, unlike the U.S., which uses a lot of bad chemicals.” Beyond the meals, Leo enjoys the charm of small-town life in Lora del Río, where he can walk everywhere, a stark contrast to the car-dependent lifestyle in Modesto.

Finding Support in a New Environment

Leo has been fortunate to connect with supportive individuals who have eased his transition. His nutritionist, Paula, was the first to greet him at the airport, offering a warm welcome. His roommate, Cristobal Vargas, has played a crucial role in helping Leo adjust, offering rides, training support, and a brotherly presence. “Cristobal made everything easier for me. He’s like an older brother,” Leo said. Manuel Crespo has also been instrumental in providing guidance and encouragement.

A New Perspective on Soccer

Training with Spanish clubs has given Leo a firsthand look at the tactical depth and precision of soccer in Spain. “In Spain, the coaches expect you to play well and fast,” Leo said. His initial reaction stepping onto the field was one of gratitude. “I thanked God for guiding me in the right direction. This is just the beginning of my dream.”

The drills have been both challenging and enlightening. “They got me tired so my body could react on its own. It’s about being smart on the field,” Leo explained. He’s learning to rely on instinct, a shift from the more deliberate decision-making he was used to in the U.S.

Learning from the Soccer Community

Leo’s second week also included observing a third-division soccer match. “Watching the level of play was amazing,” he said. “It inspired me to push myself even harder.” The quick, mistake-free style of play among local players has motivated Leo to adapt to their high-speed, collaborative approach.

Reflections on Growth

Through all the training and cultural immersion, Leo has come to appreciate the blessings in his life. “I’ve learned how lucky I am to have a family that supports me,” he shared. Wandering through Spain’s beautiful streets and landscapes has left an unforgettable impression on him, inspiring him to aim higher in both soccer and life.

Looking Ahead

As Leo continues his journey, he is laser-focused on improving every aspect of his game. His training sessions with Cristobal, adherence to a disciplined diet, and daily commitment to personal growth are setting a strong foundation for the weeks ahead. “I’m excited to give it my all, day in and day out, and revolve my time around soccer,” Leo said.

A Proving Ground for Dreams

Leo’s experience in Spain is more than just training—it’s a transformative chapter in his life. He’s not only sharpening his skills on the field but also gaining invaluable life lessons. As he moves forward, Leo’s story serves as an inspiration to other young players chasing their dreams.
